FPU’s student board experiences community service

Fayetteville Public Utilities’ (FPU) Student Utility Board (SUB) recently experienced how community service and helping others in need benefits those who live in our community. By participating in two annual community service projects which FPU sponsors, the youth board gained a new perspective on how FPU supports our community.

Youth board members assisted FPU with the Harvest of Hope Food Drive by donating to and delivering food items to the local Good Samaritan Association to help stock its shelves for the upcoming months. The SUB members also visited with three- and four-year-old children at Amana Head Start. While there, the board helped with Christmas crafts and read books to the children. FPU employees and the youth board also purchased gifts - gloves, toboggans, crayons, coloring books and toys – with donated funds to assist the head start in providing gifts for the children’s Christmas party.

“Community Service Day is a way of teaching the FPU Student Utility Board that it’s important to give to those in our community who need extra help during the holidays,” says FPU’s CEO and General Manager Britt Dye. “At each monthly meeting, our student board learns something about FPU that they did not know before serving on our youth board. So far this year, they have gone behind the scenes and seen how drinking water is treated and distributed to our customers, toured an electric substation and learned how our electric department operates, and they toured one of FPU’s natural gas gate stations and learned how natural gas is delivered to our community. They have experienced first-hand how we go beyond daily duties as employees to help our customers in need and give back to the community.”

The January SUB meeting will highlight FPU’s Channel 6 and how it is used to not only spotlight FPU but also shares information and entertainment from many areas of our community through its local programming.
