Local students selected to attend leadership conference

Will Ellis of Fayetteville High School and Alyssa Hampton of Riverside Christian Academy have been selected to attend the 2019 Youth Leadership Summit sponsored by the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association and Fayetteville Public Utilities. The Summit will be held March 3-6 in Nashville, TN, at the Maxwell House Millennium Hotel.

Each year, two junior class students (one boy and one girl) are chosen from each participating electric system’s service area to participate in the Youth Leadership Summit. Student applications are submitted to FPU from each local high school. Ellis and Hampton were selected based on their accomplishments and leadership roles which include school organizations/activities, church activities and participation in community events.

This three and one-half day seminar educates young leaders about our state government and hometown electric cooperatives and rural electric systems, enhances leadership abilities and gives them an opportunity to meet our state legislators on Capitol Hill. Other highlights include a tour of the State Capitol and an opportunity to listen to House and Senate Committee meetings at Legislative Plaza. The group will spend time at the Nashville YMCA learning teamwork and problem-solving while also enhancing their leadership skills.

While at the Summit, Ellis and Hampton will also learn from electric system employees the importance of having a hometown utility in their community.

Will Ellis is the son of Tim and Sonya Ellis of Petersburg. Alyssa Hampton is the daughter of Tommy and Susan Hampton of Fayetteville.
